On the valve train.
[EDIT] OK this is officially the second-most recommended post I’ve ever written outside of comments. Can’t tell whether that says more about me or you.

Your talking about the forward and back movement? in terms of a small block Chevy V8, hard launching and heavy braking can cause travel as well as the motor being off level on the mounts. The cam is in essence free floating since the only thing bolted to it is the timing chain and there can be play in the chain.

it can eat the distributor, and cam gears, causing erratic timing, loss of distributor rotation, and also the oil pump to not spin......... usually spark jumps time, and kills the motor.............. cam buttons fix it.......

On my e36, there’s an oil pressure-driven actuator attached to the intake camshaft to advance timing based on the ECUs instructions
